The Centre for Orang Asli Concerns is proud to present “Cerita Ori”, a series of activities that centre around the original folklore of Peninsula Malaysia’s indigenous peoples. This not-to-be-missed series of events combine inspired dance choreography, ink drawings, poetry reading, Temuan music and live storytelling sessions. Amongst the event highlights is the launch of a new book “Orang Asli Animal Tales”. You can also browse other Orang Asli related books in our reading corner, participate in a craft-making workshop, or shop for Orang Asli arts & crafts in the mini-bazaar.

EVENTS

Sat 16 Jan

1.30pm
PUTERI GUNUNG: Pensol (Nose-flute) Music Performance by Bek Terus from Kampung Woh, Changkuar, Perak.
The pensol is the bamboo flute played with the nose. The melodic tunes played on the pensol usually feature the dream songs sung during curing rituals and celebratory occasions. These songs are taught to the shaman, usually in a dream, by his (or her) gunig or spirit-familiar. Together with other instructions from the gunig, these songs are to be sung in a trance ceremony or kubuq (sewang in Malay) for healing purposes that usually involve the whole community. If the occasion is celebratory in nature (as in after the rice a harvest, or following a good fruit season), then the beat takes on a faster pace as in the cenacik trance-dance. Playing the pensol, however, is a solitary affair, and the player usually chooses the ritual tune according to his mood.

1.45pm
RIAU RADUNG: Music and Dance Performance
Performed by Kumpulan Jo-oh Balai Simpai, a Temuan Dance Troupe from Kampung Paya Rumput, Banting. It is a music piece that recalls the rituals and customs surrounding the rice culture in Paya Rumput.

2pm
DIARI PERIBADI AWANG PANGAN: Poetry Reading

A piece performed by Mahat Anak China @ Akiya, Mor Ajani and Raman Bah Tuin reflecting the reality of Orang Asli social status, identity issues and challenge in life from the past to the present, based on the recollection of personal memories from Mor and Mahat as residents of Bukit Lanjan Desa Temuan.

2.30pm
MOYANG PONGKOL: Live Story Telling Session

Performed by Ujah kenon Kengkeng and Alias kenon Sayur from Kampung Sungai Bumbon, Pulau Carey, Moyang Pongkol is one of the many Mah Meri folklore that has been passed down from generation to generation. It is a story about a tiger spirit who transformed into the children's father while the father was away from home. The tiger revealed his original self after being discovered by the children and was then cursed with Daun Keladi Bantut to become Moyang Pongkol.

This session is followed by a sharing on the tradition of storytelling in Mah Meri culture and how their many taboos and customs are transmitted verbally and through their legendary symbolic art of woodcarving.

3pm to 5pm
MAH MERI STORYTELLING & CRAFTS DEMO

1) Pandanus (hake’) Weaving, by Julida kenon Uju
Dudo Duri: A thorny basket believed to ward off evil spirits and keeping children safe.
2) Wooden Mask Carving, by Alias kenon Sayor
Moyang Pongkol: A Moyang story bearing the message of not to trust strangers quickly and being level-headed while facing critical situations.
3) Wooden Sculpture Carving, by Gali
Moyang Buaya: A Moyang story about the taboo of hitting clothes while washing at the river.
